Preparing for disasters – methods and case studies for the safeguarding of documentary cultural heritage

Preparing for disasters through risk mitigation plans, adequate staff training and community engagement helps to significantly lower the loss and damages to cultural heritage in case of disasters. The Session will explore different aspects of risk mitigation, through best practice case studies (e.g. staff training, capacity building), and community engagement that effectively help to safeguard documentary heritage in case of a natural or man-made disaster. The Session will also look at how the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goal Target 11.4 (‘…strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage’) is addressed and furthered by libraries through their risk mitigation and preparedness plans.

Theft in libraries – facing the hidden truth

Theft in libraries and archives, by staff as well as outsiders, is an ever present problem many institutions face. The session aims are to highlight the importance of recording thefts internationally with the aim to de-stigmatise the reporting of thefts (something which still many libraries will not make publicly aware). It will also look at methods of raising public awareness towards provenance of cultural heritage items, and to continue to build bridges between the curatorial and commercial arms of the cultural heritage profession.
